It’s good for spaghetti sauce too

About a month ago we went outside to play and I noticed a swarm of big black ants EVERYWHERE.  Carpenter ants, as it turned out.  They are the kind of ants you don’t want around your house because they like to eat things.  Like your house.

So the exterminator came out, charged us $50, and sprayed everything.  Which is a great feeling, knowing you are spraying who-knows-what all over the outside of your house when you’re pregnant and have two little kids.  Plus the exterminator found the nest and was so excited that he insisted repeatedly that I come out to see his conquest.  Which means I might have ingested who-knows-what.

One week later and the ants were back.

So I called my mom and told her that I had to call out the exterminator again and this time I thought maybe I should go somewhere else while he sprayed, like maybe to a nice spa in Arizona.

She suggested garlic powder.  It turns out that my mother buys garlic powder every season and sprinkles it around because the ants are repelled by it.  Maybe they don’t like to have bad breath.

Instead of spending another $50,  Bob picked up a couple jars of the stuff and sprinkled it everywhere.

No more ants.

And the moral of the story, my mom will be happy to know, is that it pays to call your Mama first.  And always.

supposedly, cinnamon is supposed to work to repel them. I have also used Borax to get rid of them. It is supposed to be toxic to them but not us. I understand about the chemicals…in Alabama, we had someone come quarterly to spray around our house. i’ve never seen so many bugs as we had there.

those are great tips, Jennifer. I will have to remember them if they decide they like garlic powder afterall. hope your girls are doing okay.

We have a spray bottle of white vinegar around for when the ants come a marchin’. It smells horrid, but it does the trick. Sounds like garlic powder will work too. I HATE using chemicals around the house!

I know, I really worry about all the chemicals. I’ll have to remember the vinegar. We clean with that a lot around here so we always have plenty.

I personally always heard they don’t come close to toothpaste… but I suppose if you can get away with garlic powder, that’s a far less messy alternative!
