Unhappy Story Endings

Mary Claire has graduated to chapter books, which is fun because the stories are captivating her in a whole new way.  But since we have made a tradition out of reading before bedtime, these loooong chapters are making for a looooong bedtime routine.

Right now we are reading The Family Under The Bridge, which she loves.  Tonight I was trying to read it to her while Elizabeth continually brought me new stories to read, crawled across my lap, and played with my jewelry.  Mary Claire, who is normally entranced during stories, was playing with a bookmark and talking throughout my reading.  I finally gave up mid-chapter and told her it was time for bed and we would finish the chapter tomorrow.

You would have thought I told her Dora was dead.

She completely fell apart over the news, wailing and carrying on dramatically.  I sent both girls to bed and told Mary Claire she needed to pull herself together.

But the crying went on and on.

I went in two more times and told her it was time to quit crying and go to sleep.  Her sister was exhausted after this non-nap day and Mary Claire too.  I finally warned her that she was not going to get any stories tomorrow if she didn’t stop in two minutes and I set the timer for good measure.  When it went off the hysteria had subsided.

“Mary Claire, are you done crying so we can enjoy your story tomorrow?”

“I guess.  But I’m still crying on the inside.”

I can’t even imagine what her teenage years are going to look like.

My mom read mostly to us when we were sick. Of course she worked at the library, so it wasn’t like I was deprived of story time. My favorites were series book, The Littles who I think were the family in the books called The Borrowers. LOVED.

Don’t we all cry a little on the inside when we don’t get our way? She is a stitch!
